And I have to believe that most of the 54 million that bought the game did so because of their love for past single-player campaigns for the series, not that they desperately wanted the game to move online.
From Rockstar’s apparent priorities, I’m worried that GTA VI will be a "shared world" title rather than a single-player affair. In this age where Fallout 4 can still (presumably) sell tens of millions of copies as a single-player only experience, I question the wisdom of turning GTA into an MMO. But the grind-heavy, cheater-laden GTA Online was a big turn-off, and I haven’t gone back to it since 2013.
From GTA III to Vice City to San Andreas, I’ve always loved the series as a mayhem-filled sandbox. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t bother me that Rockstar seems to be prioritizing new, single-player games less these days, instead choosing to support GTA as essentially an MMO. But again, that’s far from official, and mostly speculative at this point. The only possible hint I’ve found about what Rockstar could be up to next was a few job listings for their Red Dead team, which indicated they were working on a new game, either in the Red Dead series or something else.
I don’t believe Rockstar has given out a recent official playercount, but even if a fraction of the 54 million GTA V players play the mode and spend money, that is not an insignificant revenue source. Part of this may have to do with just how lucrative GTA Online has become for Rockstar, which would indicate why they’re devoting so much time and resources toward that mode.
